Affirmations
Affirmations are anything you state as a truth. Our internal dialogue is full of affirmations both negative and positive. Your mind is always thinking and you are always in a sense talking to yourself. Affirmations are what you say when you talk to yourself.
When we talk about using affirmations in the self-help industry, we are talking about purposeful statements we decide to make in the positive sense. We are talking about making conscious statements to affect our subconscious. So, in self-help, the definitions we usually think of for affirmations are statements that you choose to repeat to yourself repeatedly until your subconscious accepts it as truth. Affirmations can be used in different ways. They can be used to change a habit in your life, to get better self-esteem, to change a belief, or to become better at something.
Affirmations have to be repeated over and over until the affirmation is accepted as truth. Many beliefs are easy to change and accept, but many take time and energy. While we grow up, as children, we are always learning how the world works. Some of the ways we learn is by personally experiencing it, but some is by what our parents and others tell us. Often, our experiences are misunderstood and we come to wrong conclusions about ourselves, which hurts our self-esteem. Sometimes, much of what we are told by our authority figures is not true, but rather someone else's perspective or experiences. Their conclusions may be incorrect depending on how they processed the information they received. Often as children, when our parents are distracted in their lives they may ignore our needs. We may process that information as we are not worthy of their love or attention. But this is never true. But our sub-conscious has accepted that as truth, and the sub-conscious is the ruling mind in our daily actions. The sub-conscious also isn't easy to convince otherwise.
Ideally the best step for change is to first recognize self-defeating or limiting beliefs in our sub-conscious, but sometimes they are deeply seated in our subconscious and often we aren't even aware of them. Affirmations are like a shortcut to changing our self-defeating and limiting beliefs.
Louise Hay recommends saying affirmations to yourself while looking in the mirror and saying, "I love you." and repeating things like "All is well in my world." She is by far my favorite author for learning to love and forgive myself. She has a great book on affirmations: I Can Do It
Tony Robbins recommended whole physiology affirmations and calls them Incantations. One example he uses for himself is, "I now command my subconscious mind to direct me to helping as many people as possible today to better their lives by giving me the strength, the emotion, the persuasion, the humor, the brevity, whatever it takes to show these people and get these people to change their lives now." He not only says it, but makes himself feel the emotions. Tony Robbins is for those that want to take the next step to the next level. Tony is such an inspirational speaker, I recommend listening to him on audio. My drive from and to work is 1 hours each way. I often listen to audio books to make the most of my time. Tony is one of my favorites because he pumps me up for the day with his passion, but he is also so informative. I personally recommend Lessons in Mastery
Affirmations are just one of the many tools that are available to use for us to feel better, improve our lives and guide us to the happiness and abundance we truly derserve, but it is an important one because what we say to ourselves matters. Affirmations help us to change the way we talk to ourselves.
